The story behind the city's landmarks
Charminar & the Old City
Charminar was built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, marking the founding of Hyderabad city itself, and its four grand arches have stood as the city's symbol ever since. The surrounding Lad Bazaar has traded in bangles, pearls and textiles for centuries and remains one of the liveliest markets in the Old City.
Golconda Fort
Golconda was the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty before Hyderabad city was founded, and was once the center of the world's diamond trade — the Koh-i-Noor is believed to have passed through its mines. Its acoustic engineering is famous in its own right: a hand-clap at the entrance gate can reportedly be heard at the highest pavilion, nearly a kilometre away.
Chowmahalla Palace & the Nizams
Chowmahalla Palace served as the official seat of the Nizams of Hyderabad, one of India's wealthiest princely states, and its durbar hall was used for royal receptions and ceremonies well into the 20th century.
Salar Jung Museum
The museum holds the personal art collection of Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan (Salar Jung III), assembled over decades and later donated to the nation — it remains one of the largest single-collector art collections anywhere in the world.
Hussain Sagar
This heart-shaped lake was built in 1562 on the orders of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah and named after Hussain Shah Wali, who supervised its construction. The 16-metre monolithic Buddha statue at its centre was installed in the 1990s and remains one of the tallest of its kind in India.
Ramoji Film City
Opened in 1996, Ramoji Film City was certified by Guinness World Records as the world's largest film studio complex, spread across thousands of acres with permanent film sets, gardens and production facilities that have hosted hundreds of Indian and international film and TV productions.
